Derby City Conservative Councillors

Councillor Philip Hickson JP

Allestree

Leader of the Derby Conservative Group

Philip Hickson has lived in Derby all of his life as do his family. Philip followed a varied career in the Civil Service after leaving Derby Grammar School and has done a wide range of voluntary work in the City over many years.

He first became involved in local and national politics at the age of 21 and has fought many elections since then. He therefore has considerable experience of both local politics and of Council work. He has since 1999 been Leader of the Conservative Group.

Philip is also a member of the Derbyshire Police Authority, a Director of Derby Playhouse and a Magistrate. He continues to work in a voluntary capacity as a member of the Independent Monitoring Board at a local prison.

He has a keen interest in local politics and is well known for his clear and outspoken views on local issues and his stance against red tape, bureaucracy and ridiculous political correctness. An outstanding public speaker, Philip is a feared opponent in the Council Chamber where his tight grasp of issues and his articulate contributions to debates are clear to see.

Philip is passionately interested in the City of Derby and its development and is an outspoken advocate on the City's behalf at a local and national level.

He represented Darley Ward for 10 years until the Ward boundaries were changed in 2002 and he then became Councillor for the new Allestree Ward which encompassed 40% of his former Ward at Darley.

He fights hard to protect the interests of local residents and is keen to protect the special nature of Allestree particularly from unwelcome building developments, rising crime and anti-social behaviour. Philip is particularly keen to make sure the high quality and tranquility of life in Allestree is protected for its residents.

His leisure interests include playing the piano, the theatre, travel, eating out and learning languages
